Adventures in Engineering

Adventures in Engineering introduces high school students to real-world STEM careers through hands-on experiences, industry visits, and interactions with engineers across the Tennessee Valley.

Adventures in Engineering Day is an annual STEM outreach program organized by ASMDA in partnership with Junior Achievement of Northern Alabama, Auburn University, The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH), and Calhoun Community College.

The program introduces high school juniors and seniors from across the Tennessee Valley to real-world engineering careers through hands-on experiences, demonstrations, and interactions with professionals working in science and technology fields.

Program Overview

Held each year in September or October, Adventures in Engineering gives students the opportunity to:

  • Visit organizations located on Redstone Arsenal
  • Meet engineers and scientists working in STEM careers
  • Participate in hands-on demonstrations and exhibits
  • Learn about engineering career pathways
  • Explore engineering programs offered by regional universities

The event helps students better understand what engineers do on a daily basis and encourages them to pursue STEM careers in the Tennessee Valley.

Participating Organizations

Students visit and interact with professionals from leading organizations in aerospace, defense, and technology, including:

  • NASA Marshall Space Flight Center
  • U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command (USASMDC)
  • Missile Defense Agency (MDA)
  • Missile and Space Intelligence Center (MSIC)
  • U.S. Army Aviation & Missile Research, Development & Engineering Center (AMRDEC)
  • Lockheed Martin
  • Reagan Test Site Operations Center

Event Schedule

The event begins and ends at the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) University Center.

During the day, students will:

  • Assemble at UAH in the morning
  • Travel by bus to various sites on Redstone Arsenal
  • Attend demonstrations, exhibits, and presentations
  • Participate in hands-on learning activities
  • Enjoy lunch and networking opportunities


The program concludes in the afternoon with presentations from engineering faculty representing UAH, Alabama A&M University, and Calhoun Community College, providing insight into college engineering programs and student experiences.

Student Participation

High school juniors and seniors from 23 area high schools and homeschool organizations are invited to participate.

Students register through their school counselors, and registration must be completed by the first week of September.

Participation requirements:

  • Students and chaperones must be U.S. citizens
  • Attendance is limited based on available bus transportation
