A pioneer in missile defense and sensor technology, Dr. Bernard W. Vatz was inducted into the U.S. Air, Space, and Missile Defense Distinguished Civilian Wall of Honor as a part of the 12thAnnual Space and Missile Defense Conference held at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville, Alabama; on Tuesday, the 18th of August 2009.
Assisting in the induction ceremony were Lieutenant General Kevin T. Campbell, Commanding General of the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command / U.S. Army Forces Strategic Command, and Dr. Rodney L. Robertson, the ASMDA 2009 President.
Dr. Vatz served thirty-five years in the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command (USASMDC) and its predecessor organizations. Dr. Vatz is a pioneer of missile defense and was instrumental in sensor technology development and exploitation including the successful demonstration and technology insertion of the X-Band solid state transceiver module into the Ground Based Radar (GBR). for the Missile Defense Agency’s (MDA) X-Band family of radars.
His primary areas of expertise include system engineering, trades studies, radar, signal processing, sensors, discrimination, threat analysis, communications, countermeasures, technology forecasting – not to mention – Ballistic Missile Defense, Theater Missile Defense, and Cruise Missile Defense systems.
Dr. Vatz was the 41st member of the U.S. Air, Space, and Missile Defense Distinguished Civilian Wall of Honor.
