An early inductee into the Space and Missile Defense Hall of Fame, Mr. Fred B. Stevenson passed away on 22 June 2010.
A veteran of World War II, Sergeant Stevenson served with the U.S. Marine Corps in the Pacific Ocean. These campaigns took him to Luzon, the Philippine Islands, the Solomon Islands, New Guinea, Mindanao, and Japan. During the Korean War, 2nd Lieutenant Stevenson served with the U.S. Army Signal Corps and later taught ROTC at the University of Virginia. Mr. Stevenson’s service was recognized with Bronze Star with “V” device and oak leaf cluster.
A graduate of the University of Alabama with a degree in electrical engineer, Mr. Stevenson entered the civil service in July 1955 at Redstone Arsenal. With a civilian career that spanned 23 years, he retired in May 1978. At the time of his retirement, Mr. Stevenson was the Program Manager for the Missile Site Radar, a key element in the Stanley R. Mickelsen Safeguard Complex, the first missile defense system deployed in the western world.
