In June 1993, Alan D. Sherer was appointed Program Manager for the Army Theater Missile Defense (ATMD) Program Office. In this capacity, he was responsible for the acquisition and deployment of a suit of TMD sensors, command and control systems, and weapons.
Mr. Sherer was member of the government's Senior Executive Service. He held a number of increasingly responsible management positions in both industry and the government over the course of a 28-year career. Prior to assuming management of the TMD effort in 1992, he was Project Manager for the High Endoatmospheric Defense Interceptor (HEDI) for nine years.
Alan D. Sherer was the Project Manager for the High Endoatmospheric Defense Interceptor (HEDI), a project of the U.S. Army Strategic Defense Command (USASDC). As a Department of the Army-level project manager, he is chartered by the Secretary of the Army.
Mr. Sherer was manager of the HEDI Project since 1983. This effort was a major Army contribution to the President's Strategic Defense Initative. HEDI is a research and technology validation project for a nonnuclear interceptor which would operate in the upper reaches of the atmosphere. The prime contract for HEDI was awarded in January 1986 at a value of $383 million for a 6-year effort.
From 1977 to 1982, Mr. Sherer was employed in engineering and management positions with Huntsville firms specializing in computers and systems engineering. Earlier in the 1970's, he was involved for several years in the Site Defense Program, which was also part of the Army's (then) ballistic missile defense program.
A native of Jasper, Alabama, Mr. Sherer graduated from Walker School in 1955. After attending Walker College, he earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, in 1963 and 1964, respectively. He was also a graduate of Defense Systems Management College in Washington, D.C.
